      Dear Sir(Madam),

Firstly I would like to say sorry if my English skill (especially in technical term) is not good.

We are a manga/comic publisher and we are facing with problem in processing our PDF file from inDesign.
Normally we received the original data (illustrations) from Foreign Publisher and process its in Photoshop (resize, redraw) and use InDesign to finish our manuscript and export to PDF as the final manuscript and send to pritnting company to print.
In most of project, the original data (illustrations) from original publisher is in TIFF so we do not meet any problem.

But in some projects, the original data (illustrations) from original publisher is in PSD so the problem is happened. If we export each page from Photoshop to PDF and use its to print, there is no problem and the result is in good quality. But actually in order to process hundred pages, we will use InDesign to process and export to PDF. So the problem always is happened, as image below:

You could see the real printed samples will have bad quality with something like grid allover the paper in comparison to the original printed ones.

Could you help us to know the reason of this trouble??

      Thank so much in advance.

First og all, why do you make pdf from Photoshop and then place dem i InDesign?
Simply place the psd-files in InDesign.

Making pdf’s can bu the cause of your trouble, if the settings arent 100% correct. If you compress in making the pdf, or downsample it, that kan be the problem. Or maybe at colorprofile?

I would simply place the psd-files in InDesign to awoid any possible faults in making the pdf. And you will save a time-consuming step in the progress :)

      Dear Niels,

      Thank for your reply.

Yes, we place PSD file to InDesign surely. But because we found out the problem after exporting PDF from ID so we tried to export directly from Photoshop and found out that there was no problem at all.

Can you see this “grid” (the vertical lines of light and dark) in the PDF that you export? Or is it only when you print it?

It is possible that the PDF export settings are affecting the image. Perhaps you should use Zip instead of JPEG compression, or change the jpeg compression amount when exporting to PDF from InDesign?

      Dear David,

      Thank for your sharing.

This”grid” could be seen in the PDF file on the PC screen but I think it is the artifact of the PC screen because when we zoom in bigger, the trames/dots are beautiful.
We will try to apply your suggestions and will update the result very soon.

To me, it appears like these are scans of a printed page. For example, if you scan a page that has been printed, and then print it again, you often get moire patterns. Your “grid” lines appear like very large moire patterns to me. Were these pages printed and scanned?

      Dear David,

We tried as your suggestion to change JPEG compression but it did not work :-(

About your asking for scanned data, actually we do not know exactly because the original manga data from Japanese publisher are varied and some from scanned ones.
But this data is still using now in Japan and other publishers in other country (they and our publisher are using same data set) and the quality of book is still very good and have no “grid” as ours.
