      Hi,

I need some help on how to make a white colour spot “underprint” on a coloured paper design.

      Description:

I want to print a bright light colour onto a dark coloured paper. The issue is that the dark paper overprints the light colour. In other words the light colour is insufficiently covers the dark paper. One potential solution I considered is: (i) I first print a strong white spot (say: Pantone P 1-1C) onto the dark paper, as 1. layer. Then I can print the lighter colour onto the top of the white spot, as 2. layer. I expect the white colour spot will profide sufficiently coverage over the dark paper, and let the lighter colour shine.

      I am courious:

      – What is your opinion? Do you think it is workable?

      – If there is any other solution? Maybe a better one?

      – How to tell InDesign properly how to print the colours in order? Shall I use layers?

      Thanks in advance.

      Attila

This is a complicated solution. It begins with the paper itself. Which type of paper is it? Glossy or not.

I don't think it will work, you'll have to see it with your printer.

Layerring colours is not needed, just tell the printer what to do. Take care with overprint and knock-out for the spot colour.

I would suggest taking a bright white glossy paper and print the dark colour on that. Your bright colour will be perfect that way.

Hi Gert, thank you for the answer.

The paper plays an important role in the design. It is a dark green non-glossy a bit of a rude surface.

Once I have the info from my printer, I will let you know what they said. Should you have any idea what is the best way in InDesign to set the colour arrangement in this way, please let me know.

      Thanks, Regards

      Attila,

Checked some things and sorry but indeed you'll have to provide a extra layer with your spot color on it.

Did you consider using gold or any other metallic colour on the paper? Maybe running it two times through can give the effect you want. Some of those inkts give fantastic effects on some dark paper.

Make it easy for the printer and give him 2 pdf files, one with the spot colour on it, as you said, to be printed first, and a second pdf with all the rest.
