I am currently re-designing a business card which has a black background with a ladies face on it.

The original image prints nicely as does the image when on its own in the id document. But when the background layer is on the image turns into a bad quality image which looks over exposed for the want of a better word.

I have the proof to do for a client early next week and need an answer soon please, if anyone can help.

Have printed from id as well as from a press quality pdf via adobe reader, with no difference. It was better printing from id using composite greys though.

      Thanks.

Could be an optical issue. Colors, as well shades of grey, turns to be optical slightly different then they truly are.

If that ain't the case; are you using a (lightning) blend mode, such as screen etc.? Also ensure that you use the right color profiles within your image or otherwise at your soft-proof dialog.

The transparency is set to normal if that's what you mean. Wierd thing is that the print quality pdf looks fine on the screen but prints badly; is the printer the problem – I use the RIP in the printer.

      ???

Prontoprint, when you print to the printer are you using the correct PPD for the specific printer? Also, are you using the higher value of screen ruling/frequency in the print output panel? If printing to a laser printer (which supports postscript) you can always add a slightly larger value for the screen ruling: eg: 120lpi and 2400dpi. And you can try also with a PPD of an imagesetter and use/enter the page size manually. I found that this always solves my printing problems.

PS – remeber that higher values make the images darker!
