Is there anyway to prevent the use of system fonts in InDesign? I know the preflight panel let’s you customize to exclude certain font types, but I can’t find anything that alerts that a system font is being used.

I don’t know of any way to do that, no.

David, do you have any more insight about this issue? Might Adobe add a way to filter these fonts out of the font menus in their apps, especially InDesign? According to my font manager (I use Suitcase UTC in a very corporate-managed environment) I have 810 System fonts that are permanently open and locked. My font list in InDesign is about as useful as a Rolodex from 1972.

Please make this a hot topic in your next Podcast!

BTW, I’m using Big Sur and Indesign 16.4.

I asked Mike Rankin about this and he pointed me to this good article by Kurt Lang:

OMG Thank you for that AMAZING compilation of font lore by Kurt Lang, the subtitle of which should probably be: “What Could Possibly Go Wrong?” Seriously, I made an attempt to read as much as I could, and conclude that while I could try one of the ways to deactivate, or hide, or destroy those unwanted System fonts, I might live to regret it. Fonts and their management seem to have become exponentially more complex. Why Apple and Adobe allowed this mess to get messier, I can only shake my head.

I was heartened to read in Lang’s article that somebody else, somewhere, has struggled with the same maddening trouble with Zapf Dingbats as I have, except that I had the trouble in InDesign. ID shows the font in the list, but will not apply it to any text. The only way I can use it is by opening an old document and doing a copy and paste. I’ve just switched to a new computer, and I THINK the problem has disappeared. Time will tell.

Thanks for responding to my post. I always learn something here.
