I see how to change the length, offset, and stroke weight of InDesign’s default cropmarks in the print dialog box. Is it possible to change their color as well? Trying to avoid drawing them by hand or by scripting. Thank you.

No, you can’t change the “registration” color. Cropmarks are ment to be visible in alle colors in the dokument when outputting, why do you want to change it?

Niels is right (including the “why”), but you are fortunately not limited to either drawing by hand or scripting them.

Set the Slug area of your document size large enough for your custom crop marks, then draw them – in any color, thickness, and style you like! (try “Woof”) – on your master pages.

Make sure “Include document slug” (etc.) is checked when creating a PDF.

Thanks for the replies. I want to change the color of the cropmarks so that when I send a two- or three pms color job to have plates made for the Akiyama press, there will be cropmarks that show up on each plate. If the crops are set to registration, and it is not a CMYK job, presto, no visible cropmarks.

So much of InDesign is customizable, I figured that there should be a way to accomplish it from within the application. The cropmark scripts that I have seen do not allow for color change as far as I can tell. I can do a little alteration of scripts at the programming level, but not this task.

      Thank you – Michael

Something must be wrong because if you use the Registration color, it always shows up on ALL plates, including process and spot colors. And if you use the crop marks in the PDF export or Print dialog boxes, they always show up on ALL plates.

      Hi David, Hi jongware,

      Hope you are well.

Really sorry for reopening this topic. A few days back, a friend of my colleague who is currently working in Dubai, asked the same question. I told him that it is not possible. Out of curiosity I then searched the web and tries to achieve this, but no luck.

I also tries my hand on the PDF (https://creativepro.com/creating-custom-printer-marks-in-indesign/) but didn’t get anything that could change the color of the cropMarks.

I know we can add cropMarks manually using the slug area, but I’m now more interested in some code that can change the color of the crop marks.

After reading the PDF, I see that we can change the color of the text, text bar, strokes etc, then why are we not able to change the color of the cropMarks.

I’m sure, Jongware can do some magic here.

      Looking forward to…

      Thanks,
      Masood

In the past few days, I’ve been thinking about Jongware since he hasn’t been active. So, I searched the web to find out more about him and found this. As my eyes filled with tears, I was unable to do what I was doing. Even though I only know him from forums and some messages, I have become a huge fan.

I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.
