Can I force a flowable EPUB to be portrait only?

      Cheers!

Dale: No, the “flowable” means it will flow into any shape or size it’s given.

Thanks David and thanks for the quick response!

Understand 100% about the functionality, but was wondering if there was a possibility of controlling the portrait to landscape orientation. Depending on the reader, things can go real “wonky” (technical term) when the user changes the device (Android) orientation. I’m running into pages duplicating on each side vs. flowing to the next page. I’ve combed through all of the code, but as of yet, can not solve the issue.

Dale I’m having problems picturing the issue, and how controlling portrait vs. landscape would solve it. What do you mean by “pages duplicating on each side”?

But essentially what David said is correct. A reflowable epub by nature will reflow and can’t be prevented from reflowing if the user rotates the screen. It is possible to add media queries to the code to change the size of images when/if the epub is opened on a specific device, but that’s about it. And that’s quite complicated, not supported across the board, and can’t be done in InDesign, only by editing the EPUB.

What are you proofing on? Which Android reader? Are you proofing there because the majority of your users will be using that reader?

The duplicating pages issue is having the left column content (containing either a mp4, .png, text or all three) is then repeated on the right column. In portrait orientation, it works perfectly until it’s rotated to landscape, then it gets messy. At times, it crashes.

Testing on a Galaxy 3 (version 4.4.2) and a lower-end Verizon LTE (version 4.2.2) with the Gitden reader. I’m using Gitden right now because it appears to work best with the movie content. Other ideas welcomed!

All movies and images are anchored, above line, with an inline paragraph style that is CSS tagged.

No issues with an iPhone 4s.

Combed through entire ePub, validated it and tested again. When the screen is tilted to landscape it doubles the content. I am of the opinion that flowable ePubs on Android containing .mp4’s is a murky place to tread. Travelers beware…
