I import a novel from microsoft word and place within Indesign. Type is Times New Roman, 12 points, 15.3 leading. I’ve noticed that a character style (or perhaps a paragraph style) seems to work oddly with italicized words, which suddenly downsize to 10 points. All surrounding text remains at 12 points, but italics in the middle of a paragraph revert to 10. How can I correct this?

How do you do the italic? A style? Keystroke? If it’s a style, the style might be defined as 10 when that setting should be blank.

Style in word … style in InDesign … I’ll check and clear point sizes.

A possible way to go: create a character style in Word and create the same style in Indesign. That way INDD’s will be used on import.
You could also try to use Jongware’s preptext script.
