Placing Word doc and retaining Word overrides?

I am stumped on why Word paragraph style overrides are being ignored when imported into ID.
For example, in Word, a paragraph style is created called “Normal” and is set to be flush left with a 1/2 inch 1st paragraph indent. This style is used throughout a document and some paragraphs are manually overridden so they have no indent.
When this docx is placed in ID, the paragraphs with manual overrides come in with the paragraph indents. The overrides are ignored. I have tried every import setting in CC20 and also CC17 (just in case). No luck in either. The manual text character changes come into ID so not everything done manually is lost.
The only work around is converting all the files to RTF, then the overrides are honored upon import.
What am I missing? I have never noticed this before so maybe this is just a temporary glitch on my machine. Here is a link to simple test files (docx and rtf): https://www.dropbox.com/s/3l51gml6x9n6i4j/tests.zip?dl=1
I was hoping to avoid converting all the files to RTF as this seems like a waste of time if not necessary. Thanks for any suggestions!

That does seem strange. But in general, it would be far better to apply a different paragraph style to the non-indented paragraphs. (Make one in Word that is based on the main style, but with no first line indent.)

Unfortunately, the manuscript is coming from an author and this is how they styled the entire manuscript. Since the book is over 20 chapters, fixing each chapter doc just isn’t going to happen. I was hoping that there was a secret button to hit to keep Word overrides. ;)
