Placing graphics into a shape

I am familiar with placing graphics in the normal way. The arrow appears and when I click on an area I can size the image by moving the mouse.

But suppose that I want to place the image into a shape, say an ellipse. The ‘normal’ method results in an image placed at its actual size, which may be much larger than the shape, with no option to drag and resize; which forces me to find the corner, often from another page (or it may be off the pasteboard), and Shift-Ctrl/Cmd drag it until it fits the shape.

      Is there a better method?

Mark the image with the white handtool, go to “Objects” – “Fitting” and choose “Fit Content propertionally” – then the image will schrink to fit the box.

      :o)
