I have an Indesign file with a placed illustrator file (that contains live text). I have to outline the text in illustrator and update the link in Indesign. Is there a way to get it to update in the same size and position?

You can force text to outline using this trick: https://creativepro.com/converting-text-to-outlines-the-right-way-updated.php

But in general, if you change an AI file, then update it in InDesign, it should stay in the same location.

Thanks for the quick response, David. I’m not trying to outline text in indesign, but rather in Illustrator because the printer says he does not want any problems with fonts, etc. The Illustrator link when oulined and updated in indesign moves the link into the top left corner of the picture box.

It’s best not to use any tricks – as pointed out to me before from Dov Isaacs!

When you make a PDF for production, use the preflight tools in acrobat to outline text

I also think your printer is being overly cautious. Fonts should be embeded in the Illustrator file.

Save as an .ai file with a pdf compatible. And place that in InDesign.

There should not be any issues with the font – unless the font does not allow embedding, in which case it is probably against the EULA to outline too.

Make sure you are updating the .ai file using the Links palette instead of using Place.
Also, Preferences->File Handling->check Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking

This is probably not related, but If you have Layers in your .ai file, click Show Import Options to make sure the Layers you want are showing.
