Performance of InDesign CS5 drags to a crawl

I have the latest InDesign CS5 and am working with a book of several documents with each document including text frames and graphics along with several master pages (with graphics, too). I've noticed this situation on two different documents where all of a sudden performance drags to a crawl. I can count the seconds between typing characters and their display.

I've tried minimizing all InDesign panels, disabling high-quality video display, tried story editor, and even moved the text I'm entering to the rear of the document in hopes that InDesign doesn't have to adjust text and graphics following my current entry point. I've even terminated all other applications so InDesign is the only thing running.

I do have a bunch of fonts installed, am not using a font manager at all, and I suppose I could remove most of them given some time… But, I don't think it is the system. I have Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, 8GB of fast DRAM, 27″ iMac i7 CPU. Windows is configured to use the default settings.

Can anybody please point me to resources that can help?

      thank you,

      Ken

Try in the Preferences and change the Live Screen Drawing to “Delayed”

Try disabling Preflight. I found that working on 100+ page documents with lots of graphics and text, Preflight tends to go through the entire document very often, taking up resources you don't need used, especially when all you're doing is adding new blank pages.

Just remember to use Preflight before you export/save/package your files.

I also recommend that you check for updates for InDesign and your OS. Be sure to install everything and then restart.

Are you running the file locally or from a server? If your server is slow, that might slow down your work too.

Yes thank you. Have the latest InDesign CS5 updates. The issue has been with 64-bit Windows 7 (boot camp), MAC OS has been great. So, here's what I did:

      1. Preflight disabled

      2. View resolution to Medium or High (doesn't really matter)

      3. Live redraw set to delay

      4. Pages panel with Thumbnails not shown

That combination seems to really help!

And yes, the files are all local — not on any server.

      Thanks
