      Hi.

Most printers seem to want pdf compliant to PDF/X-1a:2001. However, I find that when I export an indesign (or indeed a more low budget pageplus) document to this sort of pdf, the edges of image frames faintly show, and criss cross over other frames.

I assuming this has something to do with transparencies.

When I export to Press Quality or PDF/X4:2008 I don't see the same problems in the final pdf.

Though I've never had any problems (touch wood) with this faint, visible frame edges showing in the final printed product, I often feel ill when I send them away to print on the off chance that something goes wrong ;).

Does anyone have any advice on the above for a relatively new, entirely self-taught publisher?

      Cheers.

Yes, you're probably noticing the flattener transparency “stitching.” If you zoom in/out on it in Acrobat, do the lines get bigger/smaller? If they're always either one pixel or they disappear, then they're almost assuredly “artifacts” (they're not really there; they just appear on screen).
