I have a book layout in InDesign 2.0 on a Mac (OS X 10.5.8, PowerPC CPU). There is no preset in InDesign 2.0 for exporting a PDF/X-1a:2001. Is possible to do this export and if so how, preferably with the minimum of additional software/hardware?

Adobe tells me that their current cloud version of InDesign is incompatible with my Mac.

InDesign 2? PowerPC? Wow! That’s old school, man! :-)

The good news is that PDF/X-1a is mostly just a preset of a bunch of regular PDF settings. If you choose “Acrobat 4” compatibility in the PDF export dialog box, you’re most of the way there.

If you have Acrobat Distiller you could print a .ps file to your desktop and drop onto distiller?

Many thanks David and Skiddy. I will try both routes. I’d thought of the second one, which I could do by moving the .ps file to my WinXP PC (another oldie!) which has Distiller, but was put off it by this Adobe staff comment: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1810028 .

Which is the most authoritative source for finalising the specification of PDF/X-1a:2001, once I have selected Acrobat 4 compatibility in the InDesign export PDF process?

i understand distiller is not ideal, live transparency shouldn’t be an issue as X1a flattens files, but this would get you out of a hole, we have used Distiller in the past with good results. I believe Distiller comes with a preset for PDFX1a output. Good luck.
