PDF's created in InDesign print black as grey in Preview (though not Acrobat Reader)

The subject line makes clear I have a workaround (I print from InDesign or Acrobat Reader, not Preview), but I wonder whether anyone has seen this behavior and discovered a fix.

The grey, by the way, is not a halftone, but a pattern of white dots on black.

I almost forgot . . . it's not entirely simple: I get that grey output printing to a PostScript laser printer (Xerox 3220 PS), but I get perfect black printing to a cheapo HP LaserJet 1012.

Mac OS X's Preview is known not to be entirely PDF-compatible. Don't use it.

You describe it to as the very definition of a halftone and yet dare say it's not one?

Thanks, Jongware. I fully accept your answer, though I hadn't, before this, experienced this sort of goofy behavior in Preview. And I'm not a print or design pro, but I think of a (positive) halftone as black dots on white. You'd have to see what Preview does on my PostScript printer: it looks like a Microsoft Word happy snowflake pattern, not at all like anyone's definition of a halftone.

Again, thanks for the (knowledgeable) response!
