Anyone have any experience with any of the myriad of conversion software solutions to pdf to epub conversion, in particular for fixed layout?

      Hi Tim

My company’s software ‘CircularFLO’ will now convert PDFs to Fixed Layout EPUB3 and KF8. More info on that here https://www.circularflo.com/instructions/#pdf_tools

You will need the latest update from here https://circularflo.com/update/ to access these new tools.

      Thanks

Would you recommend your pdf tools over using a pdf to Indesign conversion?

I have been outputting fxl from Indesign directly so far.

      Thanks

      Hi Tim

The tools we have give an easy and quick way to get PDFs converted to searchable Fixed Layout EPUB3 and Amazon KF8.

Attempting to convert your PDFs into InDesign documents and then exporting out to EPUB will be a more lengthy approach, it will be harder to do, you may well not get an exact conversion and you also won’t get the Amazon KF8 output. So, yes, I would recommend our method!

      Thanks
      Ken

      Hi Ken

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately the client wants to change the typefaces, for licensing purposes, so we may have to convert from pdf anyway.
      Your method does appeal though.

      Hi Tim

Sounds like a lengthy process! Actually there is no need to change typefaces for our PDF solution as we can use embedded text for search and display a high quality graphic to the reader without embedding a font.

I have a question that piggybacks the current discussion on converting pdf to fixed-layout. A few years ago client had us design a course primer in iBooks Author. We then followed up those with an interactive pdf for those without iBooks access. Now, they’re buying their employees surface tablets and want fixed-layout ePUBs. Is there a backward process we could use from iBooks to InDesign or interactive PDF to ePUB3?

      Hi Carrie

Either the PDFs exported from iBooks Author or the interactive PDFs you mention can be placed in to InDesign and a fixed layout EPUB then generated.

CircularFLO has tools to help you do this and to make sure that the live text in the PDFs remains searchable in the final fixed layout EPUB3. https://www.circularflo.com/instructions/#pdf_tools
