I’m working on a 3′ x 6′ banner and exported as a modified press quality pdf. The file size is 298MB. When I export using my bleeds preset based on press quality, it’s 52MB. I then did a test by going to the press quality preset and adding crop marks and bleeds, and the file size is 52MB.

How can adding crop marks and additional image data create a pdf that’s 1/6 the size?

I think you need to look at your export settings closer. There is no way that all settings are exactly the same except for crops & bleeds. I would start by comparing the PDF version you’re exporting to, along with the resolution of images.
