PDF Export Trouble

      Hello all,

I registered because I am having some trouble with my indesign file. It’s my architecture portfolio, about 60 A4 pages, in a booklet. I have tried several ways of exporting, both high and low quality and the lowest file size I’m able to achieve is 30 mb, which is quite a lot. After this, I’ve tried to compress it further using both acrobat pro and https://smallpdf.com/compress-pdf, none of which has rendered me a file smaller than 20 mb. It seems that the file can not be reduced. I have read that it is related to transparency and masks and so on but I can’t seem to fix it. I’ve reduced all large images in the file…In Acrobat, whenever I try to save as optimized pdf, and alter adjust transparency settings it crashes and is not even able to save the file.

      Any help would be appreciated.

Large PDFs usually are due to lots of images. The pdf presets don’t always offer the options you want. Try changing the color and grayscale resolution to 150 ppi and set the compression to Medium. That might help. More info here:

I’ve had once the same issue. In my case I noticed that raster images can be extremely compressed, but vector images not. So when you have a very complex vector graphic full of gradients, shapes and colors that might eat up memory. Do you have vector images or raster images?

Great point, Ari! Wow, yes, vector artwork (e.g. artwork from CAD systems or Illustrator) will not compress. This was a topic of discussion a while back here: https://creativepro.com/creating-smaller-pdfs-from-a-vector-dense-book.php
