      Hey guys,
I just joined today because my boss dumped this job on me which has to be done by the end of the week. I have no idea how to do it, or even if it is possible.

He wants a PDF document (of policies and procedures) which is about 2000 pages long. He wants only the headings/subheadings to show on the document as a list. Each heading will be clickable and will reveal the appropriate text as a sort of drop down. Then, once you’re done with that heading, you can minimise it, back to the page just showing the headings.

I don’t know if I am explaining this properly, but I am picturing a website FAQ (I wish I could find an example).

I don’t even know if this is possible on a PDF, but I certainly don’t have the skills to create it. I don’t know what to do, please help me. If I can do this, is there anything similar I can do, even if it’s just a contents page as a menu (he won’t be happy, but at least I won’t be empty handed)

Thank you in advance for your help.

You can do something similar with the Bookmarks function in Acrobat.
      In essence:
1 create the document in InDesign, using Para styles for the headers/subheaders
2 export to PDF, with “create tagged PDF” selected
3 open in Acrobat and use the Bookmarks panel “new bookmarks from structure”

Then the sidebar of the PDF contains the list of headings=bookmarks, and clicking a bookmark displays the relevant page.

More on PDF bookmarks here: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/page-thumbnails-bookmarks-pdfs.html

It’s been a long time since I did it for real, but I just tested the basic steps successfully with CS6 and Acrobat 9.
      Good luck,
      Chris
