I bought the study guide offered on this website. It is a great guide to learning Indesign. I poured through it for months and tried to create every senario it illustrated so I could learn by doing. I learned a LOT about Indesign. I also bought some testing software so I could get a feel for the actual test. I was scoring in the 80's and sometimes 90's. So off I went to take the test…..and failed it. It was much more in depth than the guide or the practice tests indicated. I realize some of my downfall is that I do not have a lot of practiical experience with Indesign. I am trying to get certified so I can get that job where I can get experience. I have since bought “Real World Indesign” and will be studying out of that. Here is my question. With what do I measure my readiness? Like I said, I was passing the practice tests pretty well before. Does anyone have any advice? I really want to get this done.

      Thank you,

      Peggy

Hi Peggy, I'm sorry that you had problems with the test. Your comments are interesting to me, because the exam was specifically designed to test real world expertise and experience with the program over knowledge. I think the idea of using Real World InDesign is good, but the best thing would be to just create a bunch of InDesign documents with the knowledge you now have. For example, find magazine and book pages and try to recreate them yourself.

Thanks, David, for answering my question so quickly. I will take your advice and I WILL pass that exam. I watched your Lynda videos a couple of years ago. You made such a “geeky” subject as Indesign so interesting. lol. I may get another month of Lynda again. Thanks again. Peggy

      Hi Peggy-

I'm also sorry to hear that you didn't pass the test the first time. As the author of the guide, I feel like I'm right there with you in the testing room. It's true that the test is rigorous and there are no shortcuts to passing it. Maybe you also had some bad luck of the draw with which questions you got. It happens sometimes.

If you haven't done so already, I'd suggest the you re-do the self assessment from the book in light of the test results, while they're fresh in your mind and focus on the areas where you you need the most work. Your attitude makes me think it's just a matter of time till you are an ACE. :)

      -Mike
