Paragraph Numbering in Paragraph Styles: I am trying to format a document (a contract) that will have paragraph numbers for each heading – then numbered clauses under each heading.

ie So the first heading would be

      1 heading
      1.1 fsldfjls
      1.2 jdldgl

      2 heading
      2.1 jvlxcjv
      2.2 dfjdlg

Is there a way I can get the 2.1 and 2.2 etc to automatically number – I can only seem to get it to follow on from the previous paragraph – ie it will say in the second paragraph 1.3 1.4 instead of 2.1 2.2

      Hi David

Further down the document I need to increase the level eg:

      7 dlgjldjglj
      7.1 fkdgg
      7.2 lldfjldg
      7.2.1

Can you tell me how I create the 7.2.1 etc?

Also can you direct me to where I can find a list of what ^1.^#^t these symbols mean and are there others that can be used?

Each level requires its own paragraph style. So “7” would get one, “7.1” would get a different one, and “7.2.1” would have a third paragraph style. All three would be auto-numbers with a Restart after Any Previous Level.
The codes like ^1 are from choosing from the little triangle pop-up menu to the right of the Number field. So ^1 means “the first level number”, ^t means a tab, and so on.

No matter what I type in I cannot get 7.2.1 to appear?

      Try this:
Download this IDMS file and then use File > Place to place it into a new document. It’s a snippet file of just one text frame with a numbered list in it. You’ll then see in the Paragraph Styles panel three styles, which you should be able to investigate to see how I did it. It’s quite simple once you get the hang of it.
