I’m creating a paperback using text variables for the page folios. Due to the printer’s requirements, I had to create the book using “Facing Pages” turned off. There’s a master page for even (left) and odd (right) pages.

The pages headers/folios should read Author/Story title. That is, the left hand page should read “Johnston McCulley” and the right hand page should read “The Mark of Zorro.” The introduction should read “Sandra Curtis”/”Zorro’s California”, etc.

Alas, the right page variable now populates all the folios, right and left pages. What method should I use to keep the text variables on odd and even pages different?

Hi Rich, you made it right with facing pages… if you can change the printer!
I have no idea of what kind of printer requirement request a non facing pages document.

LuLu … they publish hardcover books … If CreateSpace did hardcover books, this would be a non-issue, since they did the paperback.

I suggest you to save the facing pages document and place it into a non facing pages one.
It’s the easy way to achieve your goal without having to manually assign different master pages to ex even and ex odd pages.

I’ve never heard of that … you mean just place the document into an existing document?

Yes, you can place an InDesign document, it behaves just like a multipage PDF.
So you can place each page into a non facing pages document maintaining all the original elements on the pages.

I’ll give it a try … in the meantime, is there a more conventional solution to the Page Variable thing>?

What type of file do you need to supply to the printer?
If it is a PDF file then facing pages or not in InDesign does not really matter as you can export the PDF with bleed as required on all pages. Non facing pages normally have equal bleed all round so set this bleed in the export dialogue box.
If they need an InDesign file then it gets more complicated as Claudio has suggested.

Bleeds seems to be a hot topic at the moment, remember that most modern prepress workflow systems (from Kodak, Agfa, Fuji, Screen, Esko etc) will crop pages and manipulate bleed as required at pagination. We do 24 pages full colour self cover magazines and just export these with 3mm bleed all round (not as spreads) the workflow does the rest, trims the bleed where required. It should not be that big an issue.

I’m confused by the opening post.

Is the problem the non-facing pages or is it that the poster needs help with running head variables? On one hand I thought it was about not being facing pages and things being messed up so far as positioning of running head/folio boxes, but on the other hand, the OP says he is getting the same running head on both sides.

I’m not sure what is going on.
