      Hey INDD Secret Folks,

I’ve had this problem since CS6 and I can’t figure out why. Maybe it’s a setting that I’m just ignorant to, but I really need help understanding what’s going on. I’m on a Mac, updated to the teeth. (Yosemite, CC 2015, etc).

Let’s say I’ve created a five-page INDD doc with CC 2015 (this issue applies to 2014 and CS6 as well). The document specs are 5.5″ x 8.5″. But let’s say I want to change the last page to be 7″ x 10″ (or any obscure number). When I select the Page Tool from the Toolbar and click on the page I want to edit the size of, eight handles show up around the page border: three along the top, three along the bottom, and one along either side of the document. This is, assumedly, so I can click and drag my page size to any dimensions I want, not caring about the precise measurement…so long as it’s just bigger! Whenever I do this, the page begins to preview the size it will be, but when I let go of the handle, it snaps back to what size it was originally! The change does not accept, and I’m left with the same default size I created when I initially made my five-page file.

However, when I click on the page to select it as the one I want to change with the Page Tool active, rather than using the handles, I go up into the W x H number fields at the top of the screen. If I select the point of origin (little 9-dot box) I desire, and type in or bump with my arrow keys to the W x H size I want, the change DOES work!

This is, I suppose, a workaround to my issue. But I can’t figure out for the life of me why the page size won’t update. Does it have something to do with Liquid Page Rules? (Which I know nothing about). Is it an INDD master pref? Is there a supporting system file that is corrupt and needs to be deleted from the Finder and reset?

Any help would be stupendous. Been battling this issue for about two years and just now thought to post about it here. Hope someone can help!

      Thanks!

Hold down the Alt (Option) key while dragging the page corners, and they’ll stick.

WHOA!! Thank you guys SO MUCH. *smacks forehead*

I have to say though, that it’s a little counter-intuitive to have the default action of a tool from the Toolbar require a modifier key held down in order to work. So confusing…that possibility hadn’t even crossed my mind.

Anyone care to offer up their opinion of why that’s the case? Just curious.

      Thanks again, David and Ariel!

I believe it’s because Adobe did not want to make it too easy to change a page size accidentally. Also, because one of the main uses for the Page Tool is previewing what will happen in a liquid layout situation if or when a page size was changed.

When I hold down the option key and pull on the bounding box, the page still snaps back to its original position. Like the OP, if I change the page by typing a new value into the height box, it works. Ideas?

As always Anne-Marie’s InDesign video clearly explained the Page Tool and told me all I needed to know. So I set up a 1/3 A4 6pp leaflet where the 3rd page had to be 2mm narrower to allow folding inside pages 1 and 2. However, with the fold-in page selected, the two other pages move as well with gaps between the pages appearing. I’ve just use tried handle dragging which didn’t work but then did subsequently after I entered the reduction in the Control Panel field. Relaunching Id, I’ve found that sometimes handle dragging works and sometimes doesn’t. Have you ever comes across something like this before? I was wondering whether I should trash the preferences.

      Kind regards
      Michael

If you need to change the page size by a specific amount (e.g. 2mm), it’s always much easier to do it with the Control panel or the Properties panel. However, be sure to set the reference point first! That’s the icon on the far left of the control panel. That’s how you avoid gaps between the pages.

For anyone thinking of posting an answer – I thank you for your interest – I’ve just stumbled on the solution:

It’s the Liquid Page Rule in the Control panel – turn it to off and the pages do what they’re meant to.

      Thanks

      Hi,

Im new here. But I can give you another trick.
In older version it works ok – CS5.5, but in CC2019 dont. I dont know in other versions.
Any way, in CC2019 after you resize the page with Page tool, you can freely move the page in the position you want in this way: after you select the Page tool, select the page you want to move, but dont release the left button of mouse and drag the page close to the page you want to attach.
I dont know why, but if I click again on the page, it select the elements from the page.
Maybe is an error on my instalation or I have some settings activated?

      All the best
      Vasile

Hi all. Seem to be having a problem and can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Working at home like most of the world right now, on a new laptop with ID 2019. When I click on the page tool, nothing appears to let me change the size of the page (the nine dot box at the top, the H and W boxes, nothing at the top at all) and the click and drag while holding alt does nothing either. Just snaps right back to letter size. I am guessing something was set on the laptop before I got it, but I don’t know how to fix that setting. Any thoughts on how to make the page tool instrument panel appear? Thanks so much!

E Davis: Does it help if you click once on the page? That should activate the corner/side handles. As was said above: you need to Option/Alt drag the handles to make it stick.

Not sure why the Control panel isn’t displaying anything. That’s weird. Maybe quit and relaunch InDesign, or… if the Control panel really is blank, maybe this post:

For others looking for an answer, I did discover that the panel at the top is called “control panel” and is viewed by clicking on it in the Window drop down (beside Help at the top). Who knew? It has never not been there in any of my versions of InDesign, so I never knew it had a name or could appear and disappear. Now to figure out how to resize the page. Take care, all.
