Hi there..I have’t worked in InDesign in a few years and recently received a project for an 11 page “workbook” that is either going to be spiral bound or three punch hole for a binder. Still waiting to hear back.

      1. As far as page set up..is there something different I would have to do than if I was setting up for a bounded book?

      2. Should I work with facing pages since this is either spiral bound or hole punched for a binder? Would it be easier to work in single pages?

      3. when I export to printer (I will also ask what the printer wants) is it necessary to put the pages in printer view/print order or is that something the printer usually will do? (imposition I believe it is called)
I am not sure what is customary or “normal” when it comes to exporting in InDesign, these days.

      4. or should it be exported as single pages and let the printer put in order in the “book”

      Thanks for the help!

1 Allow enough space for the binding.
2 Facing pages. It makes more sense of what goes where (ie. not getting too close to the binding area).
3 No, the printer will impose it.
4 Output to a print ready pdf – NOT individual pages.

5 Talk to the printer about the binding, pdf format, and anything else you are not sure about.

      Cheers

Thank you for your response. Sorry for my ignorance on this subject but this program is not my expertise.
When I output to a print ready pdf will it show the pages next to each other like facing pages or does it show them each alone?
Is there an option I would have to make sure to click on or if the set up is facing pages in indesign, it will auto save that way as a pdf?
      Does that make sense?

I am worried that the client is not going to know who the printer is they are using and I will be on my own with this…

And as far as imposing, I would just work in reader view…1,2…3,4….4,5…6,7…etc as page setup and then they printer will go and make sure that page 2 is with page 7, etc….so it works once printed out..is the correct?

      Thanks again

No let the printer do any imposing.

You have the option when outputting to pdf whether to have spreads or single pages, Single pages for the printer, Spreads to show your client is a good direction.

Don’t keep thinking you need to impose it – you don’t. The printer has software for that.

      Thanks so much.

So pdf file in single pages for the printer but to show the client do spreads when saving as pdf..got it!

I know, I get confused when I think about the layout and imposing!! LOL

      One more question for you…
In the spiral bound or the 3 hold punch would you suggest making the inner margin (where the binding would be) wider than the outer margins or should they be symmetrical?

You will need more space in the gutter (inner margin) to allow for the spiral or 3-hole punch. I would make the inner margin 3/4″. Outer margins can be symmetrical if you think it looks good, but I would keep it a minimum of 1/2″.
