I've put myself in a strange situation here with CS4.

Initially I wanted to start Page numbering at page 2, so I went into the Numbering & Section option in
the Pages menu and selected the option and value “2”, but that didn't work. The automated “Page 1”
still showed up. So I started messing around with Page 1 and …

… Page 1 is gone !! I tried to delete it and add it again with a different master to get rid of the “page 1”
number, but in the process I lost my page 1 altogether. My .indd starts at page 2, full stop. I've tried
inserting 1 page before page 2 several times, with the original or another master, but it's no use.

As anyone had this problem and is there a fix ? Is it a known bug ?

      Thanks

Found a fix by creating a book out of my unique doc, but still, would like to know if there's a normal procedure to get page 1 back for my original .indd

      Thanks

Double-clicking on the black arrow above the Page 2 thumbnail, in the Pages panel, should also bring up the Numbering & Section Options dialog and setting it back to Automatic Page Numbering should make the document start at Page 1 again. I've never had problems with this, so I haven't a clue what could be wrong here if that doesn't work.

If you can't get it working, you could start a new document with the same settings and move your pages from the faulty document to the new one — by selecting the pages in the Pages panel and then going to the fly-out menu to choose Move Pages.
