      Hi there,

Relatively new to InDesign. I’ve had no problems in the last few days overriding master page elements on various pages throughout the document… ctrl, shift & click. For some reason, when I try it now, it duplicates the object rather than allowing me to edit the original element.

Any ideas? Tried a few google searches, but I can’t find anything. Hopefully something simple that I can’t fix due to lack of experience.

That’s odd – the first thing I would do is check the master pages. Perhaps you have items duplicated on top of one another?

I can see no other reason for this happening.

Try creating a brand-new file with a master page and one item on the master page. Then try to override that object on the page. And let us know if it also happens then.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I don’t have access to the project file/computer in question until tomorrow but I have since opened up a new project on my own pc with no issues. Can override master objects on various pages.

Good suggestion mtngigi, having read that I thought duplicates on the master might be an idea, but then thinking about it more, most of the objects on the master are of about 50% opacity and this remains consistent throughout. If there were duplicates of these on the master surely the opacity of the elements would be brought up to 100%?!

I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to investigate the project file in question further, let you know then.

I seem to have sorted it out anyway. Strange.. on more than one page there seemed to be an empty frame/object covering the whole page. I wasn’t getting the duplication thing when I went back to it today like yesterday but that empty object layered on top of other objects seemed to be still hindering my overriding attempts. Also, not sure where the empty object came from, wasn’t on the master, but was on more than one page.

Just have to put it down to lack of experience. Thanks again!

At least I thought I had sorted it… apparently not. You can see from the short video below that there are no duplicates on the master. You can also see that some of these objects are capable of being overridden. However some objects when clicked (ctrl shift click), produce duplicates.

A video is worth a million words. This seems like a real puzzle to me. I’ve never had this experience before. I think we’ll have to leave for David to figure out.

Must say it’s driving me mad. I’ve used photoshop for years and years along with various other Adobe tools, so thought this should be a breeze. I was going well until I hit this… I’m just stumped. In the process of starting again from scratch, hoping the same issue doesn’t crop up again.

Try this: save your file as an .idml and then open it back up to see if it got fixed. Saving to IDML can fix a lot of document issues.

      No joy, thanks though.

      Try resetting your preferences.

      Close the program.

Hold down the Command-Option-Shift-Ctrl keys (on Windows, hold down Control-Alt-Shift) while you start the program up again.

While the program starts up, keep the keys held down until the splash screen appears along with an alert offering to “Delete InDesign Preferences File?”. Release the keys and click Yes.

When you rebuild preferences, you lose any custom application defaults you might have made in the Preferences dialog box, and any Presets you created (custom PDF presets, Document presets, etc.).

Tried that twice, didn’t get a splash screen either time having held down ctrl alt & shift the whole way through program start up, and then some.

Checked the issue anyway, still persists. Cheers!

But were you successful in trashing the preferences in the end?

This is my 3rd or 4th attempt at replying here. Messages won’t appear for some reason. I successfully reset preferences after a 3rd attempt. Still no change, it was only a fresh install of InDesign so I couldn’t imagine preferences could have become corrupt on the first project on that install? I tried the project on a different machine… same issue. So I’m just in the process of rebuilding the same project from scratch, hopefully I don’t run into the same issue. It’d be nice to know what’s going on all the same.

This happens to me occasionally, where there’s no way to release a certain object.
My solution: (until someone on this forum solves this) I put the problematic item onto a separate layer, lock or hide all other layers, and then override all. (shift command option L)
