I have a document with auto page numbering set up on the master page. It appears that even if I override master page items on the document pages and detach the items from the master, when I then move a page, the auto-numbering still updates itself. Is there a workaround for this or is the auto numbering side of things completely separate from the master page system ?

what is really odd is in the page layout pallete it looks like the numbering has not changed BUT when you go to the page it has changed. very strange?

      thanks

If you used the “auto page number” character, then yes, it is separate from the master page. It’s just a normal character (type > insert special character > markers > current page number), so it doesn’t matter if it is on a document page or a master page.

Hi David, thank you for your response. It may be I’m not explaining myself clearly but it almost seems like a glitch. I did indeed use Insert Special Characters > Marker > Current page number …. on the master page. Then after I have created a few pages from that master… i unlink the pages from that master. when i then move a page in the page layout window, the number held on the page changes accordingly, even though it has supposedly been unlinked. the very odd part is that within the Page layout pallete it doesnt show that it has changed. i.e the number on the page in the page pallete shows the auto number has not changed but when you then go to that page, it has in fact changed.

I am not aware of an ‘auto page number’ character you can type to do a similar thing. I remember it for quark.. not for ID ?

Is there a way i can upload a file for you to look at ?

ps. i should add I’m not a newbie (20 years graphic and DTP exp) strangely this is the first time I have come across this issue.

      thanks

I guess I don’t know what you are trying to do.

While you can’t upload a file directly to this forum, if you have a Drop Box or 4Shared account or something, you can upload it to there and then provide the link to it here.

      Hi Dwayne

Below is a test file showing what i mean. I have set up an auto number on the master (very large) then created 4 pages from it. then overridden pages 3 and 4 and moved page 4 back one. In the pages pallete window the large auto number on the page shows that yes page 4 has moved back and the number is still showing as 4 as you would expect as it has been unlinked with the master, BUT when you then go to that page it shows the number still as 3 ?..

When I look at it, it’s numbered 1 through 4 in the actual pages, and 1-4 in the palette preview.

I’m not sure why you’re unlinking and overriding pages three and four and moving four to three.

well its because we are working on a huge pdf that has a lot of interactive links between pages, and once you move a page it becomes very hard to keep track of what has moved where in order to implement the clients changes. anyway this is my last attempt at getting someone to confirm I am not going mad. here’s a screenshot trying to explain what is happening. I think this must be a bug prehaps, I may be better off posting on the adobe forum.

It does NOT look like that way when I opened the file you sent me. My palette shows 1-4, not 1,2,4,3. So I’m guessing it’s a bug on your end with the interactive thing.

You are not going mad. Something is definitely going on as evidenced by the screen shot you sent me. The file you sent me, however, is perfectly okay when I view it.

What I think is happening is that the fact of entering “Current page number” on a master page or on another page still reflects the location of the page in the file. I did see it too, not when I opened your file, but when I moved page 4 to 3. Your screenshot is correct. Try putting something else on page 4 and you’ll see that what you entered after you move the page will be on the new page 3.
Your screenshot shows us: page 4 is before page 3, but the “Current page number”=3, because it is the third page in your document.
Current page number is like a pointer. Even if you unlink it from the master page, it still is a special char. Copy it again to the master page and it will be shown as “A” and not as the exact “page number”.

You explained very well, Gert. I was trying to find a way to explain it but you beat me to it.

thanks all. it was the pallet not updating that was confusing me here. once you move or add an element to the page in question the pallet updates itself. just a bit annoying.
