Overall page numbering and section-specific page numbering

I have a document that has sections that are named APP1, APP2, etc. At the bottom of each page, I have to add the overall page number of the document (that, I know how) but I also have to add section-specific page numbering, for example APP1-1, APP1-2, which restarts every section (APP2-1, APP2-2…). I don’t seem to be able to do it, however. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

In the Pages panel, when you add a section, you can set it to restart page numbering. Did you see that option?

Yes I know that option. I want to use it in parallel with the overall page numbering that does not change with the section.

I’m working on a Bible project in which I need to name the “book name” and chapter number as variable headings, so far no such luck. Anybody, any ideas? Thank you.

Étienne — Ah, I see. I should have read your post better. So you want this kind of numbering:

      APP1-1 1
      APP1-2 2
      APP1-3 3
      APP2-1 4
      APP2-2 5
      APP2-3 6

where the number following APP1 and APP-2 are section-level page numbers, so to speak, and the last numbers (1 to 6) the accumulated page numbers. If that’s correct, you can use either of the tricks described by David Blatner (https://creativepro.com/use-numbered-lists-instead-of-auto-page-numbering.php or https://creativepro.com/sequential-numbering-inside-paragraphs.php) or a script. I would use a script to do the numbering because it can override the master items, which, as David mentioned, is a hassle when you use a non-scripted method.

Here is another method, using the Section feature:

Thank you David, et all… I have three things against me, 1 Last time I used a similar program, was about 21 years ago (Pagemaker), 2, I haven’t been the “super-gick”, and 3. I’m 71 years old; in other words, all I learned in “computer kindergarten” I can’t hardly remember. However, thank God for guys like you.
This is what the header would like when finished. “(Left page) “Matthew 3” – (Right page) “Matthew 4”. or (L) “Revelation 2” and (R) Revelation 3, etc. As you may know, there are 27 books in the New Testament, where we are working on, and most of those books, except for four, have different chapters. Would the APP1-3, etc. would work?

Thank you for the pleasure of being helped by a professional.
