      Hello all,

Not really an Indesign question but was hoping someone may know why this happens.,

When doing a output preview in Adobe Acrobat 9.4.6 some pages with black text on it show up as 4 colour black, but when said pages go into indesign they are just black. Why?

Also, I'm wondering what it means when you say “go into InDesign.” Do you mean they look black when they're in InDesign but turn 4-color in the PDF? Or are you talking about placing those PDFs into an INDD document, and they appear black there (in Separation Preview panel)?

      Sorry David,

When I place the pdf's on to indesign pages and use indesigns separation preview the black is correct.

These pdf's come from a customer to be printed at our shop.

Eugene: These files are not made locally in indesign all I receive is PDF's

So maybe to explain just a little better :)

Customer sends us PDF's of their publication (pretty sure they did it in indesign), when i do a preflight in acrobat some of the black text appears to have 4 colour mix. Place those same pdf's into indesign and do a separation preview and the black text is not 4 colour but correct at Black.

The PDF's are not low res the photo's in them are cmyk and of high quality.

      Thank you both

      Kevin

I think they may have embeded the colour profile in the PDF. If you're not viewing it in Acrobat under the correct profile blacks can seem to be four colour (to the best of my recollection, it's been a long time)

I think most RIPs will strip out any embedded profiles, so I don't see it being an issue if it's the case – but best to make double and tripple sure.

With InDesign it maybe set to ignore embedded profiles. That's why it shows as 100% black and not 4 colour.
