I’m building a crossword puzzle clue list and want to allow quotation marks that start the clue to hang in the tabbed area slightly. Currently, I have it formatted with a tab after the digits.

Optical alignment only works for the text box, is there something similar for inline text?

I think it’s awesome that you care about making the text look good like that. While optical margin alignment (OMA) only works at the margin edge, one way to do this would be to use a table instead of a tab. Just make 2 columns… 1 with the number and 1 with the clue. OMA works in table cells.
