OpenType stylistic alternatives and character variants

I recently bought the OpenType font Halis Grotesque at Fontspring.com. This font has character variants for the letters “a” and “g”. In InDesign (CS6), if I select some text typed with that font and go to the OpenType features from the menu in the character Pannel, it appears that the “Contextual Alternates” are inside brackets [], which means that this feature is not available. The “Sylstic Sets” as well are all between brackets []. So there is apparently no way to change these character variants automatically for a batch of text, unless I do it manually, one by one, for each “a” and “g”!
With Photoshop (CS6) though, if I type some text, select it and choose “Stylistic Alternatives” in the character pannel menu, the text changes and the “a” and the “g” change automatically for the whole selection.
It seems that the OpenType features for this font are not all existing, but Photoshop still manage to find alternates variant.
Is there a way to do the same thing with InDesign? Is there a way, but how and where, to create custom Stylistic Sets?
I would be very happy if someone could give me some lead on that topic. Thank You.

I believe you have uncovered a big difference between the Adobe programs. InDesign does not support the Stylistic Alternates feature, while Photoshop and Illustrator do. See the big table near the end of this post: https://ilovetypography.com/OpenType/opentype-features.html

However, you can use the Find/Change dialog box to do this. Don’t forget to use the Load Selected Glyph in Find (and Load Selected Glyph in Change) features in the context menu!

Thank you for this precise answer and links. Although it’s quite deceiving to see now and then InDesign’s limits (especially when it’s beaten on it’s own field by an image editor), the workaround you suggest with the Find/Change function will do… Thanks and have a nice day.
