I have a very old ID file (1995) of a book my father wrote. I no longer have a version of ID that will open it. Is there a plug-in or other service that can open old files and save them in the newer CC application?

Hm… it probably isn’t an InDesign file, because InDesign 1.0 didn’t come out until 1999. Could it have been PageMaker? Or QuarkXPress?
Here’s something on opening PM files:

You’re right. It must have originally been done in Quark, which is what I used before making the big switch. I guess the years are getting away from me! At any rate, I can’t open it.

And thanks, David, for the help on a holiday weekend! The book is not a big deal; it’s a brief family history of my maternal grandfather’s ancestry, and was not/will never be a best seller.

I know there’s a Quark to ID converter, but it’s not worth the investment for this project.

Email me and I can convert:

Now that I think of it, InDesign should be able to convert Quark to InDesign, though not the greatest.

Just make sure that if it’s pre-Quark 6 or so, file name has a .qxd extension. If later versions of Quark it’s .qxp.

InDesign should be able to open it.

Thanks for the suggestion, Dwayne. Sadly, it did not work. It’s really not a big deal. Sooner or later I’ll find my print copy and then I can recreate it. It’s a short book and very simple, and no one is really interested in it except me!

Good luck, Jennifer. If you change your mind, I can always try to open it.

I’m curious why InDesign couldn’t open it. Did you get an error message saying it was the wrong file type or something like it was corrupt?

        Merry Christmas.

It recognized the qxd extension but then crashed when I tried to open it.

The other day I remembered that I have an old computer at our camp (in Maine, that’s what we call our cottages, and in our case it’s where my in-laws lived for 30 years), and I might have an older ID on that machine, or even Quark. My mother’s old laptop is also there and she never made the switch, so there’s that option as well. Too many old computers floating around, yes.

(I still have my original Mac Plus with 20MB external hard drive!)

Jennifer–wow–that Mac Plus is a relic. Very cool to still have.

Did you try to open it with the fonts turned on (i.e., Suitcase or something)? If so–try to open without fonts turned on.

Thy changing the extension to qxd or qxp – then you should be able to open the file :)
