Opening old ID files in InDesignCC 2015 – how long does it take?

I’ve got an InDesign project created in 2006 (I’m guessing that makes it CS 2) that I’m trying to open with the latest version of ID (on a PC running Windows8). The file is 19 MB.

I can’t tell if it’s just going to take a really, really long time to get this file converted, or if it’s actually crashing InDesign. I’ve got a dialog box that says “converting data” that’s been running for more than an hour and I’m not really seeing the progress bar advance at all. I gave up and force closed ID and rebooted and tried again and seemed to make quick progress that then ground to a halt.

Anyone had any experience with this situation?

OK, I”ll answer my own question! It eventually DID open, but took more than two hours, much of which I was convinced that ID had probably crashed. So, be patient!

I have never had one take more than a minute, and I can get some big files. It probably depends on what is making it big (external links to large photoshop files, complicated internal cross-references, grep styles, etc.). Or perhaps it is time to upgrade Windows 8. It could be that rebooting to clear memory and not running anything else before trying to convert it might help. You may also not have enough free RAM and for every conversion operation it makes, it is spending lots of time swapping in and out of memory and/or disk.

Yeah, it usually only takes a few minutes for me. Maybe something was slowing down your bandwidth. I don’t think it actually uploads your graphics — just your INDD file. So if the INDD file size is huge, I suppose that could make a big difference.

Well, after I got it open, I did a “save as” to get it into the latest version and THAT file takes massive amounts of time to open as well. Started an export to IDML to clear out whatever the issue it and it took a long time, during which there was a power outage in the building! Just got it open again (took 45 min). All I want are the master pages, fingers crossed I can get what I need before the next crash!
Suitcase Fusion seems to be behaving very strangely as well, not sure if it’s a font activation issue causing all the trouble.

I give up. All the time I’ve spent messing with it. I could have just built it all over again.
