Maybe I missed this part on Lynda.com, but for some reason it appears anchors are viewed as actual characters and take up space?

Here’s what I mean: I have a simple block of text that I’ve anchored to the beginning of the paragraph (no indentation in paragraph style) right below it, and have properly set it up in anchor options to be an above the line anchored object with a little space before and after. However, the first line of the paragraph to which the anchor is placed at the beginning registers a small indent approximately the size of the anchor icon. I’ve jury rigged a fix creating a small left indent in the paragraph style and then adjusted that one line with local formatting, but I had always assumed that anchors, like in HTML, are not registered as actual characters in output. Am I wrong?

Odd… no, anchored objects definitely should take no space at all.
Oh, but an inline object could take up some space! Check anchored object options to make sure it’s set to Custom (not inline). Or, if you’re trying to put it between paragraphs, perhaps use an Above Line instead.
