    I just noticed this and thought it was worth a quick share.

    A text variable like a chapter number has a hairline box surrounding it.

    I thought thats a cool feature as it allows me to see that 'hey that's a variable' and treat it accordingly.

    Mine doesn't?

    When on a master it has a dotted stroke around it? No hairline though? Perhaps it receded, just like my hairline is! Ha ha – oh man my jokes are pathetic.

    Curious. Overprint preview should be turned off. Preview mode should be turned off… oh, and Type > Show Hidden Characters needs to be turned ON! Does that help?

    Cool – thanks for checking that David, I know it's a very subtle line but it is great to be able to actually see a variable. I noticed it on a job I am doing in CS3 (please upgrade client), and thought, I have to tell someone.

    Ah – show hidden characters – that's it.

    Rarely have that turned on unless dealing with supplied files.

    Oha and I went through all the “View” settings lol and it didn't work. *tries to think of pathetic joke but too tired* :)
