I use the numbered list feature for ticket numbering.

I use this IDS post as a guideline.

      https://creativepro.com/mak…..ickets.php

After creating the numbered lists on the master page, I override them on page 1 and then copy pages in the pages panel.

The first page numbers just as nice as can be. The remaining pages number in reverse. For example, on tickets I just finished, the first page is contains 101-108, numbering from the upper left to the lower right. The second page numbers are 109-116 from lower right to upper left. Third page numbers are 117 to 124 from lower right to upper left.

Is there a way to have all of the numbers run from upper left to lower right? I love this feature. It works great for short run numbering. It is a little confusing.

      Hi Jennie,

I use this function alot and I've never had this problem, are you using facing masters pages?

Select “Show Text Threads” from the View menu, and examine the direction in which the boxes are linked …

I am not using facing master pages.

What is really odd is that I am not showing any linking between boxes. They should show linking, shouldn't they? The numbered list continues from one box to another…

      Any other ideas?

I appreciate your time on this one!

Yes, you are correct: if the numbering continues from one box to another, and you can put your text cursor in one box and move it to another just by keeping going down, the boxes are linked (“threaded”, as Adobe calls it).

Try View menu -> Show Text Threads.

Okay, it just gets stranger. Each numbered box seems to stand alone. No text threads are shown. That may be because I have number across stories selected.

I initially created the numbered lists on the master page then override them on document page one. Then I just start option-dragging on page 1 (makes 2 page total)…then select page 1 and 2 and option drag both for a 4 page total, and so on, and so on, and so on…

Hi Jennie… I think you're running into an oddity about how ID handles multiple numbers in a single list on a spread: The numbers are arranged in the order you created the frames! It does not “see” where things are on the page. Frustrating, eh?

Very frustrating. I'm just confused because the first page has the numbers the way I want them and the rest are bass-ackwards.

PS. Welcome back!!!! You've been busy since you got back from Lynda.com.

      Thanks, Jennie. Yes, it's been a busy week… month… year…. decade… life… ;)

The clue is how you created the “objects.” You made them on the master page, then overrode them, then duplicated the pages. If you duplicated the pages and then overrode the objects on each page, one at a time, it would probably be more reliable. But when you duplicate the pages, ID must create each page object… and it probably starts with the “last one first” (LIFO).

Believe it or not…that makes sense! No way am I overriding individual items when I get one that runs to about 800 pages. Thanks for all your help on this and everything you do for IDUs!

I came up with the answer to my problem one sleepless night.

I have just finished a job for two different tickets (adult, student), printed front/back, 6-up, 3000 numbered tickets of each. The tickets are set up 3 down and 2 across. So, I created the master page with the automatic numbering. Upper left ticket # used “List1” starting at 001. Center left ticket #, “List2” starting at 501. Bottom left, “List3” starting at 1001. Used 6 different lists each starting to number at the prior start +500. I did use a completely different file for the back. I just couldn't see having 1000 pages in each document instead of 500.

This solved 2 problems. No longer are the numbers in different sequences on different pages. No longer do they have to be hand collated to be put in consecutive order. Once the sheets are cut the stack that came from the upper left is numbered 0001-0500, center left 0501-1000, etc. This is just a sweet solution to the whole thing.

Hope this makes sense and helps someone else.

On another note…I discovered that you should never (and I do mean never) use auto numbering in lists on a half sheet form and then option+click+drag to create the second half of the page. I had 2 lists in the form, 1-4 and 1-3. Option+cllck+drag and the copy also had 2 lists, which no one discovered until after printing, 6-8 and 4-6. OOPS!!! Fortunately the secretary was very understanding. So, that was my learning experience for yesterday…
