I’ve taken over the layout of a book from a designer who apparently has no idea of the automation capabilities of InDesign. There is one paragraph style (Basic) and everything is locally formatted. Of course her TOC is done manually, with the page numbers preceding the TOC entries. I’m trying to rebuild this using a TOC style. I can specify that the page number precede the entry in the TOC, but how do I right-justify the page numbers, so that the chapter titles all start in the same place (since the page numbers are from 1 to 3 digits in length)? This is not something that can be done with a character style.

      Hi Clark.
      First of all… I deeply sympathize :-/

Now, you’re asking two different things:
1- “so that the chapter titles all start in the same place”: that’s easy if you add a tab between page number and entry.
2- “how do I right-justify the page numbers”: all I can think of (except a script), is to use GREP to add a tab before the page number and then to set up a right-tab marker. Unfortunately this isn’t a fully automated method and you’ll have to do it every time you update your TOC.
Maybe someone will come with a automatic solution…

Thanks. Yes, I’ve seen this solution mentioned here before. And like he earlier poster, was looking for an automated solution.

Clark, do you have one or more lines? If you have one line, the you can enter in the automatic toc ^n^t for Shift return and tab, set leading to 0 and control the aligment and space with the applied para style.

If you have more than one line, this could be done with some lines of scripting.

Thanks Kai. Some of the entries go to two lines. I’ve decided to manually format the numbers using a right tab. Just a few extra steps when all is said and done.
