"Not taggable" frames when trying to tag for accessibility — why?

When I choose 'Add Untagged Items' from the Structure pane submenu, I get the error “The frame or frame content is not taggable.” With no explanation.

A quick bit of copying and pasting into a new document, and then trying the command, then selectively deleting text and trying again, has determined that a somewhat complex anchored object is the culprit. (It's simply a text frame grouped with another frame atop it.) Whittling down the object by removing some of its grouped objects doesn't help matters; i get the same error. However, copying one of those 'sub-objects' and then deleting the anchored grouped object, then re-pasting that copied sub-object in as a new anchored item (still with me?) is fine; the command is successful.

Similarly, removing the anchored object from the flow (so it's still a group but no longer anchored) yields success.

So apparently the grouped anchored object is simply cursed for some reason unbeknownst to me, the humble user. I knowe not what magick happens behind the wizard's curtain.

Anyone know what makes it not taggable, and what the fix is (for this 500-page book!)?

      Thanks in advance.

Addendum: I see the same issue reported here without resolution:

      Addendum 2:

The below page from Adobe states “You cannot tag a group of objects. To tag an item that's part of a group, use the Direct Selection tool to select the item.” But there's no mention of anchored objects.

I do feel like a voice in the wilderness here; any other campers out there?

      Wow, that is interesting!

No, I think you're out of luck.

You can only tag a single frame; you can't tag a group of any kind, even if it's an anchored object. I think the Add Untagged Items feature looks at that anchored object and freaks out, not knowing what to do.

Only idea I can think of is to turn that group of objects into a single “image” with a tool like layoutzone from automatication.

      Hey David, thanks for replying.

I doubt that layoutzone would work with anchored objects, and there are many in this 500-page book. But if you think it's likely to work, I will give it a try.

I thought the solution, albeit tedious, would be to just tag each anchored object by hand in Acrobat (on the exported PDF of course) — but after selecting an illustration with the TouchUp Object tool, in the TouchUp Properties dialog all fields in the Tag tab are inaccessible even though the container itself is correctly tagged as 'Figure'. Any idea on that one?

Another option might be to script it. But I suspect that if the UI in general doesn't allow tagging the object, a script will not work either…. ?

      Addendum #3:

Tested tagging those objects in Acrobat 9 on PC and it works. Not sure why 8 on Mac doesn't. Very odd.

Addendum # 2,311: It turns out tagging does work using the TouchUp Object tool in Acrobat 8 as long as the Order pane of the Tags is visible. How bizarre.
