      Hi,
I’m using CS5 on a mac. I recently had to change a folder name that contained art that is used in multiple documents in a book.

In the first document that I opened, I received a warning about the missing art when I opened the document. The status of the art in the Links panel showed which pieces needed to be updated and I relinked everything and saved. Everything worked as expected.

However, when I opened the second document it didn’t give me any error messages and the art’s status didn’t indicated that any art needed to be updated.

I closed InDesign, re-started InDesign, re-opened the files and InDesign finally gave an warning message that this document had missing art.

I had to close InDesign after every file to get it to “see” the missing art in the next file.

Any ideas of what could be causing this or how to fix this behavior?

      Thanks!
      Kristi

Not sure anything needs to be fixed. When you opened the 2nd document, did the Links panel show any art as missing?

InDesign actually remembers what folders you’ve relinked to recently. So after you found the art in the first document, it probably automatically “found” it when you opened the 2nd document.

However, it may not SAVE that new information in the 2nd document. So you may need to open each document, do something small, then save the document. Not sure if that will help, but it might.

Thanks David! Saving the file (even though it hadn’t asked me to update anything) worked.

David didn’t mention it, but there are File Handling preferences as to whether INDD a) checks for links and/or b) finds missing links before opening documents. Many users will never have a need to change the defaults.

However, I (and I assume others) spend a great deal of time swapping FPOs for high-res, and in order not to miss anything, I typically have FIND turned off. Finding low resolution images while the press is running is not a good thing….

Excellent idea Bob! I do have both of these settings checked. I’ll do a little experimenting later to see what works the best for me.
