I have had this problem since I bought the presses (2nd hand) about 6 weeks ago. When printing dark grey and black solid areas the colour turns to a lighter shade from left to right.

I print direct from Indesign to my OKI C9600 press (I have two but only use 1 at present). It has had new refilled toners and fuser.

I find when printing PDF's from my mac they are darker than direct printing. But some jobs are very slow to print from Indesign as the printer is having to work harder i suppose.

I am very to new to this lark and the training I was promised fell through. I am based in Spain so it's not easy getting advice.

      Many thanks to whoever

Have you tried exporting to a pdf then printing directly from Acrobat?

Don't have Acrobat at all – have just been using Preview. Probably wrongly.

Am downloading Acrobat Reader as it's free to try that.

But am wondering whether it's the press that's causing the dark to light scenario?

      Cheers

Unless you need to print using black only, my suggestion is to try adding 10% Cyan, 10% Magenta and 10% Yellow to the black. So a 50% Black would become 5/5/5/50 (CMYK). Alternatively you could add 20% Cyan and skip the rest, if you want a cooler black rather than the warmer, thicker black of 10/10/10/100 (CMYK).

I found I have to do this to most jobs I print on our Canon CLC4040 to get nice, solid grays and blacks.

You should really get Acrobat Professional.

Where Reader is free, Acrobat Professinonal is for… well professionals and gives you more control and also allows you to see the Output Preview detailing the amount of ink used in each channle (Cyan Maganet Yellow and Black). And this would help you further track down your issue.

But there's a multitude of things going on regarding the Dark Gray issue. I recommend you take a trip to Lynda.com and look at videos for Colour Management and other related things.
