      Hey guys,

Can anyone direct me in the right direction for finding information on how to nest the TOC for Epub and Kindle.

      Thanks

      In InDesign or in HTML?

If in the code its nested HTML ordered lists, the NCX follows the same basic principle. I tried adding the HTML to this comment and I couldnt get the tags to show up, oh well, its probably easier to Google how to nest ordered lists anyway, if that’s what was your question.

I havent sat down and really focused on nesting the TOC within InDesign so I’m not sure exactily besides giving each a different level number in the TOC style window, I tend to unzip the file after export and nest the TOC by hand.

      Hello Aaron,

The toc.ncx and the toc.xhtml file.

I am new to indesign. I have figured out what I need to do in order to design and publish an ebook, except nesting. When the epub is created there is a toc.ncx file and the toc.xhtml file. If I delete the toc.xhtml and only use the toc.ncx file I can nest properly in epub format but when I go to use kindle previewer I get an error message stating that i need the toc.xhtml file. I cannot properly nest the toc.xhtml file. I have tried many things but the outcome remains the same. I have also noticed that the toc.xhtml file overrides the toc.ncx file for epub. I’m stuck.

Yeah if you’re exporting to EPUB3, the default TOC is the toc.xhtml file, and the toc.ncx will probably be depreciating (going away) soon. Most ePub readers still recognise the NCX so that’s why you probably havent had any issues, but the Kindle format is probably depending on the toc.xhtml solely for the TOC.

I have attached the a link to drop box with a screen shot nesting up to 3 levels (its the same concept for more levels) if you want to dive into the HTML.

Thanks Aaron. I will get to work on this when I’m free and let you know what happens.

      Aaron,

That’s odd. I can’t paste any code here. I have tried everything. Still stuck. Now I understand that naming the “epub: type=” maybe causing that list not to show. I am attempting to have a nested list named “Quotes”. But the Epub simply does not recognize the list and will not display it in Adobe Digital Editions. When I export the epub to Kindle previewer I get the same results. Here is the toc.xhtml file code from Dreamweaver. Thanks for the help:

Sorry for the hassle, Blusse. Your reply with code in it is causing some trouble with the forum. But it should work if you put html PRE and /PRE html codes around it

      David,

No worries. I’ve been meaning to setup a dropbox account but never got around to it. Thanks.

Blusse, I have put together a sample TOC with a few levels of nesting with some light commenting to try and explain it. Its pretty much a complete toc.xhtml, I have included a Page List nav section which you can delete, its just an example of how a Page List would look in the toc.xhtml.
