Navigating through ID pages from the keyboard has been a thorn in my side since switching from QXP years ago. I'm sometimes zoomed in on a particular area of a page, and need to navigate to the same area on the next or previous page. This was easy in QXP, because I kept the elements (such as variable page codings) in the upper-left corner of the document page, and Quark automatically took you to that corner if you did a “CMD-Page Up/Down”. ID takes you to the middle of the page or spread, which is no help.

Does anyone know of a built-in KBSC that navigates in this way?

Try CTRL J or CMD J and it should bring up a dialog box to go to a page, just select the page and you should jump to that page.

I use that command to generally navigate through pages, but it still takes me to the middle of the requested page. I'm needing it to take me to the area of the new page that corresponds to the area I was viewing on the previous page.

If you use Shift + Page Up/Down you can navigate through pages keeping the zoom on the same point on each page.

Still no luck, although I realize now that I didn't specify that I'm working in CS2. Perhaps this is something Adobe addressed in more recent versions?

Yes, they may have fixed that… Shift-page down certainly jumps to the same place on the page in CS4.

I intermittently run into a problem keeping both sides of a spread visible (centered in my window) as I page through a long document using either the pages panel or the keyboard shortcuts. InDesign CS4 wants to center the left-hand page of a spread in my window even when I click the page numbers under the icons in the pages panel or when I use page up and page down commands. I would like to see both pages simultaneously (the file is a novel so I really don't want to keep centering the spreads manually) and there is room for me to see both pages—but my right hand page is stuck under my panels every time I move to a new spread.

When I am using floating panels I can make the window extra large and move enough of the window to the left to “fix” this problem, but when I am using the “application frame” setting I can't move the window to the left. I know there is a fix for this because I've done it before. Unfortunately every time this issue happens I seem to forget what I did to correct it the last time and it drives me absolutely crazy!

If you can help me with this problem I promise I will put a sticky note on my iMac.

Command-option-0 centers the spread and then paging through the document works fine!

      I remembered!

      Command-Option-0 (Zero, not o)

Doesn't Alt+Pg Up/Down browse through spreads, rather than pages? That ought to keep both pages visible at all times.

(And if holding down a modifier key bothers you, you can change the shortcut to use 'plain' Pg Up/Down.)
