I’m using CS6 and lately a lot of PDFs are acting weird. I had a client the other day say “I can’t print this PDF”, and then yesterday a lot of the PDFs I exported opened up with the “there is an error on this page” and some elements would be missing.

Here’s the weird part though: 1 – The settings are the same. I use a preset every time, so that hasn’t changed. 2 – My coworker is able to export good PDFs from her machine.

I just tried resetting the preferences and that hasn’t done anything. I’m hoping someone here has some ideas?

      Thank you!!

      Hi Chad,

When I have PDFs that are acting up, I often will open them in Preview, save, close, then reopen in Acrobat. This often (though not always) fixes the problem. I don’t why, but try that. https://documentgeek.blogspot.com/2011/03/using-preview-as-workaround-when.html

You may want to try exporting just single pages or page ranges to see if you can pinpoint the troublesome area. In the past, I’ve had weird issues when I had too much stacked transparency. Even today, I had a multipage PDF placed as a graphic, and one page was corrupted. So I fixed that one page and then InDesign was able to import the file just fine.

I’d also be happy to take a look at some of your PDFs and see if I can figure out the problem if you like.

Thank you Kelly! Indeed it was a transparency issue. I was certain that we were all using the same PDF export settings here. Turns out we weren’t! The one my coworker used saved as PDF 1.3 (mine was 1.5) so the extra flattening must have made the difference.
