My black text isn't always black

      When I had my document printed some pages printed ‘normal’ but other pages the whole page looked grayed or with less contrast between the black and white. That is, it looked like I had made the page more transparent. I went back to my computer, looked at the font color and it was black, checked the fonts-they were all the same, I checked to see if I had somehow made the page transparent. All the settings seem to be as they should be and all the settings seemed to be the same for all the pages.

      This is the seventh month I have produced the newsletter and this is the first time I have had this problem.

      I asked my printer if he knew what had happened and he said he had heard sometimes there are problems when InDesign files were made into Adobe pdf’s.
      I am very knew to InDesign and would appreciate any help I could get.

      Angelique,

      If you can post the PDF, I can check it for problems. Next time, your printer should check before printing the whole run. Some suspects: Some ‘blacks’ are Registration, spot colors and raster effects overlapping.

      Exporting to PDF x/1a can fix a lot of transparency issues. Was this printed offset spot or process? Digital?

      Thank you for responding.
      They did print a proof, but I didn’t pick up on it. I did check to make sure I was using black and not Registration. It is digitally printed, I think. We only need 375 copies os it is run on a copy machine. I am exporting with the setting “High Quality”. I will export it again using the PDFx/1a, ask the printer to make one copy and see if that fixes it.

      We printed a copy with the only change being the switch to PDF x/1a and it was perfect!
