I just found this site today and am hoping you might be able to help me. My company is just now (I know, I know) moving from using PageMaker 6.5 to InDesign CS 5.5. We are a very specialized publishing company, and my scripts in PM were written by our then tech genius just for my production needs. Now, as we enter this century, I can't get those scripts to move into ID. I've found and followed the other posts and articles about how and where to put the scripts to get them to show up in the ID Utilities/Scripts box, and I've successfully done that, but I get errors that, “This script is not executable by any supported script language.” I had them in PM as basic .txt files. Upon moving them, I tried to save them as .jsx and as .vbs files. Neither worked. I then looked for an option to create a new script, which I couldn't find. I was hoping I could create a script and name it, techncially opening a blank window, and copy and paste the code in that. The thought behind it was that the script would automatically save in a format that ID found favorable.

Any thoughts, or am I just going to have to find another way to be efficient? :) Thanks for any help!

There is no way a PageMaker script can work with InDesign.

Sorry, but that's the way it is. It's not just that the scripting language is different — PageMaker has its own unique built-in language, InDesign exports its scripting model to any programming language that supports importing external definitions — or that items have different names than in InDesign (“style” vs. “ParagraphStyle”, etc.). The entire document model, objects, commands, and properties is entirely different.

To “use” the same script in InDesign, it has to be rewritten from scratch — you cannot “change just the right bits” to make it work.

Thank you so much! Your answer will save me from banging my head against the wall. Now I'll just determine whether it's worth it to hire someone to rewrite the script for InDesign or if our current computer tech can do it. I appreciate the help!
