In a Mobi file created via InDesign and Kindle Previewer: I am trying to put a small icon centered at the top of the ebook page when a chapter starts. When I place it as an Above Line anchor, center it, and add space below, I CANNOT get it to show up when you click on the chapter title of the Table of Contents. HOWEVER, if you backup one page and then forward, it will show up– but not when you go straight to the chapter via the “in publication” TOC or the TOC that Amazon requires you to have.

I can get it to work in a straight up ePub, but once I throw it into Kindle Previewer, it won’t work.

The only way I could make it to work was to type the chapter number using Paragraph Style that was “paper” color so as not to show up, but that I can make show up in the TOC. Then, I anchored the image to another (visible) chapter title under the first title. Then, it works. This of course looks funny if someone changes their Kindle settings to sepia or black/white.

I am just baffled at how to make it work without the crazy work around I noted above.

      Hey Steve,

This sounds like the in publication TOC link is referencing the id given to the title and not to the image you anchored above it. Personally I think the best way would probably be to unzip the ePub file and make sure all your TOC links are referencing the correct id’s given to each anchored image at the beginning of each chapter.

You should check out Kevin Callahans’ feature story, “From InDesign to Kindle,” in last month’s InDesign magazine:

I’m pretty sure he covers tweaking TOCs and anchor tags.

Thank you. I purchased that issue and it helped a lot.
