Might InDesign be an option?

When I was writing my first book, which was self published and sold a jaw-dropping 87 copies, I used the InCopy to InDesign workflow but frankly found the process a bit clunky, since there were no collaborators (other than myself) working on the book. Question: are there any compelling reasons why I shouldn’t just write the next one in InDesign? The reason being, it might be easier to note the WYSIWYG formatting in “real time” and tweak the color of the pages on the fly. On the flip side of that question, are there any compelling reasons why I should not?

Congratulations on self-publishing! I’d say that if you feel comfortable writing in ID that’s the way to go.

If you don’t have collaborators, then the only reasons I can think of using InCopy would be:

      • Streamlined user interface (less distracting)
      • You can’t procrastinate for 2 hours designing a page when you’re supposed to be writing

Personally, I’d much rather type in a word processor such as Word or Google Docs, and then import into InDesign. But lots of people type directly into InDesign. Don’t forget the Story Editor for typing!

Hey, speaking of writing directly in InDesign… I just noticed that the LAIDUG group is doing a meeting on this very topic next week:

For me, InDesign is the best writing tool. Great keyboard shortcut editor, the way styles work is much better than any other program I’ve used (though WordPerfect’s character styles were better), versatility with foreign characters, easy to script (which helps even when writing texts).

      That’s good enough for me!
