For example, let's say I want a running hed at the top of my doc like this:
Kicking Butt > Lesson 1: Deciding Which Foot to Use

My instinct is to place this on an MP and apply Para/Char styles to it:
Kicking Butt > Lesson X: XXXXXXX

But unlocking it on each and every page of the doc is a hassle.

When I place an object on an MP, is there any way to tell that item to let me edit it on each and every page?

Surely there's a better way to handle stuff like this, yes? Any particular segments of Lynda.com I should check out?

I'd rather the default setting be that items on MP pages are editable (and movable)… with the option to lock particular items on a MP like folios, static rules, static art… there's no way to set IND up like this, right?

Or am I going to love the new school way so much that I wouldn't want to set up IND like that?

Master pages is one of those areas where Quark users really need to change the way they think. You cannot get InDesign masters to behave like Quark's and the more you use InDesign the more you'll see why that's a good thing.

For running heads you can use a running header text variable. I assume that the text you're wishing to use is a chapter or section title of some sort. The first step to make this work is to create a paragraph style that will only be used for those titles.

Once that's done go to your master page and draw a text frame where you want the running header to appear. Use the Type > Text Variables > Insert Variable command and choose Running Header. Then choose Type > Text Variables > Define to define the variable by choosing it from the list and clicking edit. In the Edit Text Variable dialog box choose the paragraph style you created.

Apply your title paragraph style as needed to your text and watch InDesign do it's magic.
