Master pages don't stick

InDesign CS6: I’m typesetting this book for an awkward author. Every day there are new photos/text/things to be moved/changes and amends. There are a couple of hundred photos in the book. Every time I move a photo from one chapter file to another, the pages go awry throughout the book from that page on. By this I mean that the margins with the text and photos remain in the correct place, but the running headers and page numbers and guides from the master pages move out to the end of the page.

OK, I reapply master pages. I’m told that the page size is different so do I really want to apply the master page? Yes. All looks and prints fine BUT — the next time I move a photo from one chapter to another, the same thing happens and it’s driving me mad. There’s hardly time in the day to get books done for the publisher, let alone mess about in InDesign endlessly, much as I love it!

      Any ideas? Thanks everyone.

Do you have “Enable Layout Adjustment” checked?

It’s under Liquid Layout under the Layout drop down menu. If it’s not checked, check it. Once checked be sure the first two and the last checkboxes are checked. See if that helps.

No, that didn’t make any difference. But thanks for trying to help.

Maybe try exporting as an IDML file and then reopening that?

I had a problem a while back where I also was getting that message and the pages were all screwed up. Fortunately it was all text, and not a lot of pictures.

I ended up duplicating the file. Then I deleted the bad pages where they began to the end of the file, and then relinked the text. I used the duplicated file to reposition any art. After that the file was okay.

I still have no idea why that file had acted that way.

But since your file has a lot of art involved, that may not be an option for you.

Hopefully David or one of the other gurus can jump in with a solution.

        Good luck.

Thank you Dwayne. I’ve tried all sorts of things — deleting prefs and so on. At the moment everyone is in such a rush with the deadline that there isn’t time for setting up anything new — and there are 16 files in this book so it’s no fun!!

I feel your pain so far as the deadlines. I have rush deadlines all the time (i.e., get first pass pages (approx 400) out in two days).

I’ve looked at it now, thank you Ariel, but that doesn’t seem to be the answer. I can’t understand where InD is getting the offset guides and running header/footers from whilst keeping the margins and actual book text layout in the right place. It’s like InD thinks there’s a link to a different master to mix in with the ‘real’ ones. Passes my understanding altogether!!
