Master page issue

This is a hairy one, so bear with me. I’ve included as much detail as possible, but that may mean I’ve included too much…

I have applied two master pages throughout my InDesign document (it’s a book layout), one for chapter start pages, and the body pages. I have applied new sections to the beginning of each chapter, which has worked well, as I’ve labelled each section with the chapter name.

On my plain body page master I have text headers (book title on the LH side and the Section label on the RH side), an image header that sits above the text, and page numbers at the bottom.

For some reason that I can’t quite fathom, when my chapter start page master falls on a LH side, the plain body master on the RH side won’t show the image header, but will show all other items.

I’ve tried reapplying the master, deleting pages and adding back, but I can’t seem to figure it out. Everywhere else in the book the plain body master acts appropriately, even after a chapter start page that falls on the RH side.

That is definitely weird. Does the art on the text master page bleed off the page in either direction (even just part of the image box)?

I had that problem once and could never figure it out, so I ended up creating additional master pages in an unorthodox way.

      For example:

On my new master page, on the left hand side I set it up as the chapter opener, and the right hand side was regular text.

On a second new master page, on the left hand side I set it up as the regular text, and the right hand side as the chapter opener.

Then I applied as a spread to the affected pages when I came across them. For some reason it worked.

To me, it sounds like InDesign is getting lost when it comes to that RH side when facing the chapter opener. (which was also the case in the job I mentioned).

I’ve had that happen when I’ve had a single image frame that spans both of the master pages, InDesign seems to think that the frame only applies to the left page so I’ve made separate image frames for both pages.
