      Hello folks,

I was setting up a master page today and inserted autmoatic page numbers, the thing is what normally shows as the symbol ‘A’ for the page numbering in the master page is not showing up but instead it is this thin upright rectangle shaded in that pinky colour which normally comes up when something shady is going on, but the strange thing is that InDesign is not reporting any errors and the page numbers are showing fine in that very font in the document itself? Also if I change the font used for the page numbering on the master page I can see that A symbol.

Any ideas how to fix this? I suppose I could just leave it since it seems to be working but that pink rectangle is agitating me. Silly I know.

It happens when the font doesn’t have the character that InDesign uses. To be honest, I’m not sure what the actual character is, as it appears as whatever you named your master page. In your case, it appear as the letter “A”. I name my master page for text as “TX” so TX would appear. I think in the Quark days, the # was the character that always appeared on the master page.

I’ve had it happen as well on running head variables, especially when using an expert font. The angle brackets appear pink as they don’t exist in the font.

I think you either have to live with the pink character on the master page or change the font.

It won’t hurt anything to leave it as it is.

Dwayne to the rescue again! Ok, cool, everything is working fine even though it’s pink so I will leave it as it is, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I messed about with different fonts, and for some that symbol for auto page numbering would come out fine and with others too it was coming out in pink and with a weird symbol. Anyway, thanks.

You’re welcome. After a while you get used to it sometimes being pink or having a weird character on the master page.
